How to build your own backyard pond

You can bring nature into your backyard by creating a water feature. There is no better way to incorporate water into your landscaping than with a backyard fountain. You have endless design options to create an oasis your family will love.

Select Your Location

After you have decided to build your pond, decide where it should be located.

  • Sunlight: Although it is not essential to place your pond in the sun, it will improve your chances of plant life.
  • Power source: The pump/filter runs on electricity. Choose a spot that is close to a source of electricity.
  • Environment: Pick a location with enough space to allow you to reach the pond from all sides.

Underground cables or pipes: Make sure to check with your local utility companies to make sure you aren’t digging! Your pond should not be built on top of buried lines or cables.

Choose your size

What size of the pond do you prefer? Are you looking for a water garden? Are you planning to add a fountain or waterfall? A water garden must be at least 18 inches deep, while a Koi pond should not exceed three feet.

Select Your Shape

To ensure safety, make sure you verify the locations of gas and electric lines before you dig. After marking the lines, spray paint can be used to draw the shape of your pond. Make sure to use a level to make sure all sides are equal. If you have a waterfall in mind, increase the elevation to the desired location and cascade downwards according to your design.

Start Digging

For smaller ponds, you can do it yourself. However, for larger ones, professional help and equipment might be needed. To add depth and variety to your pond plants, consider adding shelves along the sides. After digging is complete, line the hole using sand, then rake it flat. Next, lay the EPDM liner on top.

Insert Your Liners

Place the liner on the smooth side and the textured side, making sure it reaches every corner and crevice. To prevent creases, smoothen the liner and attach it with stones.

Install your equipment

Install the water filter, pump, and skimmer. If you do not have an outdoor outlet, a licensed electrician can install one. This will ensure that electrical equipment is safe around water. Fill the pond with gravel, rocks, and boulders. Be careful not to damage the liner.

Add water

The pond should be filled with enough water to reach the desired level. To remove residual chemicals, add a de-chlorinating solution to the water and let it sit for 24 hours. To prevent any harm to the fish and plants, be sure to read the label instructions for any chemical you use in your pond.

Accessorize

Before adding fish to your pond, add aquatic plants and wait for the nutrient cycles of the plants to start.

A backyard pond can increase the curb appeal and value of your home, as well as provide hours of entertainment and relaxation. Contact us for help in this and other landscaping projects.
